The Institute for Teaching through Technology and Innovative Practices (ITTIP) hosted the 7th Annual STEM Summit on Thursday, January 30th, at Longwood University. Representatives from 
several SVRTC counties attended, including: Appomattox, Brunswick, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Hopewell, Prince George, Sussex, Lunenburg The theme was, MakersLearn.
The summit had several presentations ranging from students to university staff. Dr. Talaiver, ITTIP’s director, spoke to the attendees about what qualities we find in makers and inventors before introducing the first guest speaker, a junior from rural India, Tenith Adithyaa, who talked about his Banana Leaves Technology. The summit continued with additional young presenters, this time middle school students from Charlottesville City and Albemarle County Public Schools. They talked about their collaboration with UVA for an initiative on 3D printing. Participating teachers and administrators also spoke about the cross curriculum project.
The second half of the summit’s presenters included STEM specialists from ITTIP who conducted a hands-on session where attendees were challenged to use the microcontroller, Makey Makey. The summit concluded with presentations from MathDisk’s confounder, Mohamed Jaffaralim, and NASA’s Professional Development Coordinator, Dr. Kimberly Brush.
